WhatsApp Is Testing a New Feature That Lets You Share Status to Facebook, Other Apps

WhatsApp is currently testing a new feature that allows its users to share posts from WhatsApp status with other apps. The WhatsApp beta group will get the sharing option via a button below the status. With the help of the new feature, you can share WhatsApp status across Facebook or Instagram.

Interestingly, WhatsApp Status was inspired by Instagram stories. WhatsApp Status is live for only 24-hours post which it will disappear. That being said, WhatsApp is not directly linking your account with Facebook and Instagram. Instead, it will use the data sharing API’s on both Android and iOS. Even if you share WhatsApp Status on Facebook or Instagram, it will still count as a separate event and will not be linked in the system.

As of now, WhatsApp’s new status sharing feature will not share any data directly with Facebook. However, once Facebook creates an advanced backend common to all the three services things may get murky. WhatsApp was acquired by Facebook in 2014 and the latter had promised no user data will be shared with Facebook. However, WhatsApp backtracked and started sharing data with Facebook in 2014. Three years later, the company was fined $122 million by the European Commission for misleading regulators before the acquisition.

Apple Seeds Second Betas of iOS 13 and iPadOS to Developers

Apple today seeded the second betas of iOS 13 and iPadOS to developers for testing purposes, two weeks after first unveiling the new updates at the Worldwide Developers Conference.




Registered developers will need to download the profile for the iOS 13 and iPadOS betas from Apple's Developer Center. Beta 2 can be downloaded over the air after the profile has been installed and the iPhone or iPad has been restarted.






Apple in 2019 split iOS 13 and iPadOS into two separate updates, one designed for iPhone and one designed for iPad. iPadOS is identical to iOS 13 in almost every way, though there are some iPad-specific features such as improved Apple Pencil support. For the most part, though, the two operating systems share the same features.




iOS 13 is a huge update with a long list of new features. There's a new systemwide Dark Mode that changes the entire look of the operating system from light to dark, from system elements to apps.






Apple overhauled the Photos app, introducing a new Photos tab that curates your entire Photos library and shows you a selection of highlights organized by day, month, or year, and there are revamped Photo editing tools.






For the first time, you can edit video right in the Photos app, cropping, rotating, applying filters, and adjusting lighting and color. There's a new High-Key Mono lighting effect, and for Portrait Lighting in general, intensity can be adjusted.




There's a less obtrusive volume HUD, a new Find My app that combines Find My iPhone and Find My Friends and lets you track your devices even with they don't have an LTE or WiFi connection.






A Sign In with Apple feature gives you a convenient and data safe way to sign into apps and websites, providing an alternative to Facebook and Google sign in options. Apple's even able to generate single-use randomized email addresses so you don't have to give your real info to apps and websites.






Maps has a new street-level "Look Around" mode and a Collections feature for making lists of places, Reminders has been entirely overhauled to make it more functional, there's a profile feature in Messages along with new Memoji and Animoji stickers, and Sirihas a new voice.






CarPlay in iOS 13 has been overhauled with a new look, multiple sets of AirPods can be connected to the same phone so you can share music, Siri on HomePod can detect multiple voices for multi-user support, and HomePod also supports Handoff.

While the betas are limited to developers at the current time, Apple plans to make a public beta available in July.

watchOS 6 Will Allow Apple Watch Users to Uninstall System Apps

Starting with watchOS 6, Apple will allow Apple Watch users to delete pre-installed system apps. This functionality is currently missing from the watchOS 6 beta build released by Apple.

Apple added the ability to remove stock system apps on iPhones and iPads with iOS 11. With the final release of watchOS 6, the company plans on bringing this feature to the Apple Watch as well.

The number of system apps in Apple Watch has only increased over the years. In fact, watchOS 6 itself adds a number of new apps like Voice Memos, Audiobooks, Calculator, and more. This only leads to the honeycomb app drawer of the Apple Watch getting a bit more crowded which could confuse users.

As per TechCrunch, the final release of watchOS 6 will allow one to delete system apps like Walkie-Talkie, Beathe, World Clock, Timer, Alarm, and more. However, core system apps like iMessage and Heart Rate cannot be uninstalled.

The process to uninstall system apps will remain the same as third-party ones: press and hold their icon in the app drawer and then tap the ‘X’ that pops up.

Apple is setting up App Store pagegs of all the pre-loaded apps in watchOS 6 so that users can download it from the App Store if they need them again after uninstalling it.

watchOS 6 will bring a dedicated App Store to the Apple Watch which would reduce its reliance on the iPhone for installing apps. This dedicated App Store coupled with the new APIs in watchOS 6 should help in the app ecosystem for the wearable to flourish.

iOS 13 Does Little to Improve the iPhone’s Home Screen Experience

iOS 13 is a massive update that introduces a plethora of new features and enhancements. It comes packed with a number of major new features and enhancements aimed at improving the overall usability of the OS. Despite packing some major headlining features though, iOS 13 does little to improve the home screen experience on the iPhone.

The iOS home screen last got a meaningful update of any sort with iOS 9 in 2015. Since then, the home screen has looked pretty much the same — a grid of icons — despite iPhones itself changing dramatically. Since 2017, iPhones have switched over to OLED displays, almost become bezel-less and the iPhone home screen has only received new wallpapers since then as a part of every major iOS release.

Here’s how the home screen on iOS 13 looks like:

So, from September 2016, the iPhone home screen has looked and behaved exactly the same. Apple has made certain UI tweaks, but they are minor at best and did nothing to improve the overall information density or usefulness of the home screen.

On the iPad, the grid of apps icons felt woefully inadequate with extremely low information density. The row of icons on the 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro looked hilariously bad and nowhere near offered a ‘pro’ experience that the name or the price tag commanded. By branching out iPadOS 13 from iOS, Apple has at least fixed that issue to a certain extent. The tighter grid of icons along with the ability to pin widgets on the home screen means that the iPadOS home screen now has a greater information density and makes better use of the available screen real estate.

In one glance, I can have a look at my upcoming calendar appointments, quickly trigger a shortcut, get ETA notifications from Apple or Google Maps, and more. It might seem like a relatively small change but it has a massive impact on the overall usability.



Apple should have done something similar to the iPhone’s home screen with iOS 13. The row of icons is simply inadequate in this day and age, especially on the likes of the iPhone XR and iPhone XS Max which come with 6-inch+ displays. I understand that due to screen size constraints, Apple will not allow pinning of widgets on the iPhone’s home screen. But that’s no excuse for the company to not fix the poor home screen experience on an iPhone.

With iPadOS 13 getting a functional home screen refresh, I have no doubt in my mind that Apple is working on an iPhone home screen refresh as well. It will likely come out as a part of iOS 14 in 2020, but that’s another year of waiting for something which Apple could have rolled out this year itself. Apple Launches New iPod Touch With A10 Fusion Chip and Up to 256GB Storage, Priced From $199

Apple today announced a new iPod touch with headline features being a faster A10 Fusion chip and a new 256GB storage option.






The seventh-generation iPod touch has the same design as the sixth-generation model, including a 4-inch Retina display, a home button without Touch ID, a 3.5mm headphone jack, a Lightning connector, and a single speaker and microphone. The device remains 6.1mm thick and continues to weigh 3.1 ounces.




The new iPod touch also has the same battery life of up to 40 hours for music playback and up to eight hours for video playback, and the same 8-megapixel rear camera and 1.2-megapixel front camera, as the previous iPod touch.




With the A10 Fusion chip, Apple says the new iPod touch has up to two times faster performance and up to three times faster graphics compared to the previous-generation iPod touch. The A10 Fusion chip also enables support for Group FaceTime and ARKit on the iPod touch for the first time ever.




The A10 Fusion chip is also found in the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus and the sixth-generation iPad.

How to Use Find My iPhone on Mac or PC

Find My iPhone is an iCloud feature that allows you to locate lost or misplaced Apple devices, including iPads, AirPods, Apple Watches, Macs, and of course, iPhones.




Because it works via iCloud, Find My iPhone can be accessed by logging in to your iCloud account using a web browser on any Mac or PC. The following steps guide you through the process.





Launch a web browser on your computer and navigate to www.icloud.com.


Log in to your iCloud account by entering your Apple ID and password into the related fields.


If you're using two-factor authentication, confirm the login by entering the verification code sent to your trusted device.


If you're using your own computer, you can opt to Trust the browser so you don't have to enter a verification code again. If it's a public computer you're using, click Don't Trust.


Once you're logged in, click the Find My iPhone icon.


For security reasons, you may be asked to enter your password again.


Wait a moment while Find My iPhone locates your device(s).

At this point, you should see a map that you can view in Standard, Satellite, or Hybrid mode by clicking the options in the bottom right corner of the browser window. The green dots on the map represent Apple devices located by Find My iPhone that are powered on and signed into your iCloud account via a Wi-Fi or cellular network.






Click on the dots to center the map on a particular device, then click the information (circled 'i') icon to bring up the device's options panel. Alternately, click All Devices at the top of the map to choose a device from the dropdown list.






The options available to you in the device panel on the right depend on the type of device you're trying to locate, but you should always have the option to play a sound to locate a nearby device. If it's a Mac, you'll also have the option to lock the machine or erase it, and if it's an iOS device or Apple Watch, you can put it into Lost Mode or erase it.






If the selected device is out of network coverage or powered off, you will see its last known location and a box that you can tick to be notified when the device is found. The options you choose will be performed the next time the device comes back online.

Appel Responds to Supreme Court App Store Ruling, Says App Store is ‘Not a Monopoly’

It’s probably not a shock to hear that Apple does not consider its App Store to be a monopoly. But now it has to actually make a case for that. Before the lawsuit moves forward, though, Apple is already coming out swinging.

Earlier today, the Supreme Court ruled that a lawsuit against Apple and the App Store could move forward. Here’s how that was described earlier today:

“Apple has a monopoly over the App Store through which millions of people download apps and games on their iPhone or iPad. While Apple allows third-party developers to upload and sell their apps through the App Store, these apps must adhere to Apple’s own guidelines which the company can change or tweak to its benefit any time. The company has in the past tweaked or changed App Store rules to remove third-party apps which competed with some features in iOS.”

The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 against Apple in this regard. As a result, that initial lawsuit, that aims to deem Apple’s App Store tactics are monopolistic, can move forward. But Apple is already arguing that its digital storefront is not a monopoly. At least, that’s the case today in a statement made to CNBC.

Apple argues that its methods make the App Store the most “secure” and “safe” digital marketplace for customers and developers. Apple does not weigh in when it comes to pricing of apps, especially for third-party developers, and argues that this means the App Store is not a monopoly “by any metric”.

Here is Apple’s statement:
